Julie Miller Dowling is a freelance writer and editor specializing in stories about business, food and wine, lifestyle topics, animals and the environment.
She has more than 20 years of professional writing and editing experience, both print and online media. She recently served as editor of AOL's Patch.com, launching and running one of California's first hyper-local news sites. There she wrote and edited hundreds of stories ranging from new restaurant roundups to armed robberies. She also created Patch's most popular business column, Sprouts & Shutters, which ran on 18 sites covering 21 cities.
In addition to working for Patch, Julie has also worked for the Humane Society of the United States as editor of Animal Sheltering magazine. In her years with that national nonprofit animal advocacy organization, she also developed educational materials and was lead editor for several books.
Julie has also written for Pregnancy, ePregnancy, Diablo, Tri-Valley Living, Black Diamond and California Journal.
To help give back to her community, Julie serves as vice president and publicity chair for Sustainable San Ramon, a local nonprofit organization that she co-founded to help promote sustainability in her home town.
In her spare time, Julie carts her kids off to numerous activities, practices yoga and indulges in shows like Mad Men.
